10 years have passed since the memorable inauguration ceremony of Multinational Corps Northeast (MNC NE), which took place at Wały Chrobrego in Szczecin, Poland, on 18 September 1999. In streams of rain, the first pages of the Corps’ history were written down. Together with the march of soldiers from Denmark, Germany and Poland along the Odra River, a new era of Szczecin garrison started, and in a broader sense, of multinational military cooperation in Poland.

10 Years of Success!

10 years seems to be a considerable length of time to fill the calendar up with numerous exercises, training, seminars and many other events. During these 10 years Multinational Corps Northeast has become well known in the military world and achieved a high level of military competence. The Corps passed Full Operational Capability test in 2005 becoming a part of the NATO Force Structure. Subsequently, as early as 2007, about 160 Headquarters’ personnel took part in the International Security Assistance Force mission in Afghanistan.

On the other hand, especially in comparison to traditional NATO formations and units, 10 years is not much. Thus, Multinational Corps Northeast is still a newborn structure where people constantly face new tasks and introduce innovative ideas, and where multinational military cooperation increases along with the number of participating states and growing awareness and sensitivity of soldiers to other cultures and challenges of the contemporary world. In fact, multinational environment consisting of soldiers from 11 nations already is a source of pride and strength of this Headquarters.

The Corps’ successes go far beyond the military sphere, though. The Headquarters is treated as an indissoluble part of Szczecin, its home garrison. For the past 10 years, soldiers wearing different uniforms established ties and friendly relations with inhabitants of Szczecin becoming active members of the community. Many of them consider this city their second home, some of them actually decide to stay here for good. The atmosphere of warmth between the Headquarters and the city is visible during various festivities of municipal and national character attended by the Corps’ representatives. Similarly, different Corps’ undertakings gain interest from the City authorities.

Joint Anniversary Celebrations

To commemorate 10 years of Multinational Corps Northeast existence and friendly neighbourhood of the Corps and its home garrison Szczecin, the 10th Anniversary Celebrations as well as the interrelated promotion campaign are prepared in close cooperation with the City Hall, also through the agency of the Szczecin International Fair.

The Corps’ Anniversary Celebrations are planned for 19 and 20 September 2009. They are taking place at Wały Chrobrego in Szczecin, the most representative spot of the city, and the same place where Multinational Corps Northeast was inaugurated 10 years ago.

The 10th Anniversary is going to be an excellent occasion to thank the inhabitants of Szczecin and all Corps’ enthusiasts from the whole world for great support and kindness soldiers from 11 nations have faced while serving in Szczecin. The event is therefore open to the public, with lots of attractions for the big and small ones, traditional military elements as well as excellent music and fun in select company.
