Young Ukrainians in Baltic Barracks

E-mail Print PDF

On 21 July 2009, Ukrainian students and research workers from Dniepropietrowsk visited Baltic Barracks to learn about NATO and Multinational Corps Northeast as a part of NATO Force Structure.

They took part in a briefing delivered by Major Marcin Walczak from the Public Affairs Office who talked about the Corps’ history, structure, tasks and future challenges. What is more, Major Walczak introduced the Ukrainians to the definition of NATO as "political organisation with strong armed forces".

Ukrainian guests came to Szczecin thanks to the programme "Road to European and Euro - Atlantic Integration", co-funded by the Polish International Assistance Programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland. The main purpose of the programme is to widen knowledge and to stimulate discussion about the European Union and NATO among Ukrainian students. From 14 till 22 July 2009, the students are learning about NATO, EU, Polish experiences of integration and also about potential Ukrainian membership in NATO and EU. Students take part in lectures as well as active training.

The meeting in HQ MNC NE ended in a very pleasant tone – one of Ukrainian guests thanked Major Walczak for an interesting lecture and expressed hope for also Ukrainian soldiers to fill some posts in HQ MNC NE in the future. What is more, Major Walczak and students gave each other souvenirs – a traditional Ukrainian art plate for Major Walczak, printed group photos taken in front of the Corps’ building for students and gadgets for the translator who had birthday that day.
