Planning the planningAbout 60 personnel of Headquarters Multinational Corps Northeast and Command Support Brigade together with members of its subordinate battalions as well as representatives of the Polish Land Forces Command and Pomeranian Military District gathered in the lecture room at the opening plenary session of the Main Planning Conference for the Little Eagle 2009 exercise. "The main reason to organise such an event is to share information so that everybody is going in the same direction", said Lieutenant Colonel Host, a project officer for the Little Eagle exercise and, at the same time, a chairman of the first working group.
Colonel Klaus Finck as acting Chief of Staff delivered an introductory speech and presented aims and objectives of the conference. Then, chairmen of four working groups presented the progress made since the last Initial Planning Conference conducted in November 2008. Afterwards, all the work was spread in syndicates in order to focus on specific issues and streamline the discussions. The first working group worked on manning and organisational issues as well as the evaluation of the exercise. The second group dealt with preparing a scenario and exercise play whereas the third one discussed communication and setup. The last working group had to solve all issues related to Real Life Support.
The conference ended with a plenary session, during which chairmen of all working groups presented the current status and next steps that need to be taken to adequately prepare the exercise. For that purpose deadlines for finishing all documents have been set. All in all, as LtCol Host said summarizing the results of the conference – "we are on track in the preparations"!
After the conference, intensive work within working groups will be continued. The last planning event will be the Final Conference scheduled for March, during which ultimate decisions and arrangements will be presented.
Little Eagle – our common effort
Basically speaking, Little Eagle exercise scheduled for May 2009 will be conducted in two parts. During the first phase the main focus will be placed on the Command Support Brigade and its battalions. Their task will be to set up a tactical command post, which will be manned by HQ MNC NE personnel afterwards. This phase will take place in Stargard Szczeciński. The second phase of the exercise will be moved to Baltic Barracks in Szczecin. It will have more of the exercise play character with all functional areas involved. This will enable HQ MNC NE to test its Command, Control and Information System Szafran.
