"I am deeply honoured" – with these words Colonel Kurt Birger Hansen, Chief of G-5 Division, picked up the Corps Medal from Commander Multinational Corps Northeast (MNC NE) Lieutenant General Zdzisław Goral. The awarding ceremony took place on 27 January 2009.
General Goral thanked Colonel Hansen for his engagement and excellent work on such an important post as Chief of G-5 Division definitely is. As all the gathered HQ MNC NE personnel could hear, Colonel Hansen is about to end his tour of duty at the Headquarters; therefore, it was a great opportunity to summarize all his efforts and simply thank him.
After a few personal words from the Commander, the official Letter of Appreciation was read out loud. Then, the floor was taken by Colonel Hansen himself. He was deeply touched by fine words. As he said, he was passing by the exhibition of already awarded Corps Medals every day. They have always reminded him of responsibilities and obligations to this Headquarters. Being a modest person, Colonel Hansen declared that the medal would receive his wife, who has been the actual backbone of all his successes, having constantly supported him.
Colonel Kurt Birger Hansen started his service at the HQ MNC NE in November 2003. As Chief of G-5 Division he was responsible for Policy, Planning, Information Operations and Civil-Military Cooperation. "Being (...) an officer of remarkable independence, good judgment and stalwart leadership, Colonel Hansen stimulated and actively professionalized not only his own Division, but also the whole issue of operational thinking and planning within the HQ". Therefore, he significantly enhanced numerous Corps’ exercises as well as the mission preparation process for the deployment to Afghanistan in 2007. He was also actively involved in works of the Corps Committee as a Headquarters' representative and significantly contributed to developing the cooperation between the three Framework Nations and Participating States.
