For the third time in history, Soccer Branch of the Allied Sports Club of the Headquarters Multinational Corps Northeast (HQ MNC NE) organised the Indoor Soccer Tournament for the uniformed in Szczecin area and beyond. All matches were played on 3rd April 2009 in Baltic Barracks, Szczecin.
There were ten teams taking part in the tournament – representatives in soccer from Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, 5th Engineering Regiment, Szczecin Border Guard, Command Support Brigade Stargard Szczeciński, Police Department, Command Support Brigade Wałcz, Orchestra of Szczecin Garrison, 12th Headquarters Battalion and, obviously, the host – Headquarters Multinational Corps Northeast (HQ MNC NE).
New leader of "Szczecin Cup"
All participants of the tournament got together in the early morning. After a warm welcome by Brigadier General Josef Heinrichs, Chief of Staff of the Multinational Corps Northeast, first games in two qualifying groups started. Two leading teams from each group met at the semifinals. The winners of this phase met later in the final, whereas those "less lucky" played in so-called "small final" to get the third place on the podium. There was a fierce competition for it between HQ MNC NE team and representatives of the 5th Engineering Regiment. Penalty kicks decided about HQ MNC NE team winning the third place. A situation repeated itself in the final match between teams from the Police and Command Support Brigade Wałcz. It proved how good the game was and how well the teams prepared for the tournament. In the end, "Szczecin Cup" won the team from the Command Support Brigade Wałcz; the silver was taken by the Police Department, whereas the brown medal went to the host team from the HQ MNC NE.
