Members of the Retired Officers Association of the Danish Royal Life Guards came to Szczecin on 24 and 25 April 2009 to visit the Headquarters Multinational Corps Northeast (HQ MNC NE) and to see the Corps’ home garrison.
In the HQ
As one of the visitors said, membership in the association gives excellent chances for not only meeting friends and enthusiasts but also being updated on things taking place in the army. Visiting other military units is an example of activities the association is involved in. This time, retired officers went as far as to Szczecin in Poland to learn something new. The briefing about the MNC NE – its tasks, structure and organisation – was presented by Colonel Søren B. Bojesen, Chief of G1 Division, who actually knew all the guests since they were coming from the same regiment as he was. Apart from a standard presentation, the guests heard about purely Danish issues related to serving abroad and living in Szczecin from a Danish Major Ole Reith. Moreover, they also visited the Danish National Support Element, which on a daily basis assists Danish soldiers serving in the Headquarters.
Going beyond
As interesting point in the itinerary was a visit to the 12th Mechanized Infantry Brigade, where a display of military equipment was prepared. Captain Daniel Salomon from that unit showed the Danish guests around presenting them, among other things, Polish armoured vehicles “Rosomak”, a signal/communication vehicle, mortars, small-arms and sniper’s weapons. Additionally, there were soldiers wearing winter and summer camouflage uniforms. Danish guests were very impressed with the display, which, as they said, proved professionalism and implementation of high technology within the Polish Armed Forces.
The second day of their visit in Szczecin was very much devoted to the Corps’ home garrison. For example, Danish guests took part in a sightseeing tour, during which they could see the most beautiful and interesting places in the city. They also visited an anti-aircraft and anti-atomic shelter where they could get a little bit of insight into Szczecin’s intriguing history.
