On 13 August 2009, for the 10th time Headquarters Multinational Corps Northeast (HQ MNC NE) celebrated the most important holiday for the Polish Army – the Polish Armed Forces’ Day.
Celebrations started with report to the MNC NE Commander Lieutenant General Zdzisław Goral and his opening speech. In first words the Commander welcomed all guests as well as colleagues from other armed forces, members of the Corps Headquarters and their families. He also mentioned that the Polish Armed Forces’ Day has its exceptional meaning not only for service members, but also for all Poles because of Polish military history and tradition.
Polish Armed Forces’ Day is a special day also for Polish service members serving in the Baltic Barracks – some of them receive promotions and medals. This year selected officers received Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals of Merits for Country Defense and Armed Forces Serving for the Homeland.
The Armed Forces’ Day is held to commemorate the Battle of Warsaw fought 89 years ago, in 1920. At that time Polish formations led by Marshall Józef Piłsudski, repelled Red Army offensives and saved the Polish independence regained after World War I. Defeating Bolsheviks despite their numerical superiority and their better weaponry caused that the Warsaw Battle became known as “the Miracle on the Vistula River”.
When official part finished, all guests had a chance to watch a static display as well as an exhibition about Corps’ history and achievements. Apart from that there was opportunity to ride in old military vehicle called Willy as well as ride a horse. What is more, guests took part in barbecue where the Szczecin Garrison Club waited with its show and playground for children was prepared. Traditional Polish food was delivered by a Polish military kitchen and a bakery.
