A delegation representing Multinational Corps Northeast (MNC NE) participated in an annual celebration of 1st September held at the Central Cemetery in Szczecin on 1 September 2010.
The ceremony commemorated the 71st anniversary of the outbreak of the World War II and the soldiers killed in action. The event started with a report given to the Commander of the 12th Mechanized Division Major General Marek Tomaszycki and the Polish national anthem played by the Szczecin Garrison Orchestra. Afterwards, one of the veterans took the floor and recalled events of 1939 and subsequent years of war. He talked much about bravery and honour of Polish soldiers who with no hesitation put up resistance against the aggressors. The City Major Mr Piotr Krzystek stressed that our remembrance about their sacrifice should be a warning in the future. “Let the history become the foundation of peace,” he said. The Archbishop Andrzej Dzięga focused on values cherished by the Polish nation. “How did the parents manage to instill such a sense of love to their Homeland?” he wondered. He also said a prayer for peace and the fallen during the World War II. To honour victims of the World War II, a military appeal to the fallen was performed and honorary salves fired. Afterwards, all delegations representing veterans’ associations, uniformed services, municipal, local and regional authorities as well as inhabitants of Szczecin laid wreaths at the “Memorial in Homage to Heroes of September 1939”. The Multinational Corps Northeast was represented by Danish Major Ole Reith, German Colonel Norbert Hanisch and Polish Major Jarosław Krauze. All Corps’ personnel coming from different countries find it crucial to participant in all events of high importance for Poles who are the Host Nation of the Multinational Corps Northeast.
