On 30th August 2011, the delegation of the Multinational Corps Northeast (MNC NE) headed by the Chief of Staff Brigadier General Morten Danielsson participated in the celebrations of 31st anniversary of signing the August Agreements in Szczecin.
On the invitation of the President of Szczecin Mr. Piotr Krzystek and the Leader of the West Pomerania Region “Solidarity” Council Mr. Mieczysław Jurek, the MNC NE Chief of Staff Brigadier General Morten Danielsson, accompanied by the Polish Senior National Representative Colonel Zenon Szczybyło and the German representative Lieutenant Colonel Siegmar Plonka, participated in the ceremony held in front of the monument Citizens of Szczecin paying tribute to the victims of the massacre during December 1970 protests on the Solidarności Square and in front of the Plaque commemorating the victims of the massacre during December 1970 protests next to Szczecin Shipyard gate in Szczecin.
Together with the Vice Prime Minister Mr. Waldemar Pawlak, parliamentarians from Szczecin, the region, clergy, delegations of municipal and regional authorities, representatives of the uniformed services and residents of Szczecin, representatives of the three Framework Nations of MNC NE, i.e. Denmark, Germany and Poland commemorated the date of 31 August 1980. On that day citizens of Szczecin city initiated flame of fight and demonstrated own aspirations for freedom. Owning to the signing of the first August Agreements the elementary law for employees to unify in defense of their own business was fought out. Simultaneously, it was the background for establishing “Solidarity” movement, the first Trade Union in this part of Europe.
“Today’s celebrations pay tribute to all Solidarity members who 31 years ago woke up great hopes in our country, they woke up braveness, boldness, and aspiration for equality in freedom” said the Vice Prime Minister Pawlak in his speech addressing the distinguished guests and the public. “Those were great events, which changed countenance of Poland but also the Europe and the world” he added.
